The weather here in Florida is unpredictable, as it is everywhere else, I imagine. So, therefore my fibromyalgia symptoms are out of control. But, because of the uncontrolled pain, I have been using my best home remedies....and with great relief. Here, I am going to share the home remedies that I have been using the last few days that are effective.
Ice packs:Ice packs applied to those areas that hurt the most help relief the pain. The ice pack should be applied for 20 minutes then off for 20 minutes and keep repeating. The ice will actually numb the area....it also decreases the swelling.
Ice is most effective when used on those very tender trigger and tender points in your neck, shoulders and lower back. I usually just put some ice in a zip-lock bag and wrap it in a pillowcase. Then apply directly to the area of pain. The ice stays "ice" for a longer period of time this way and I don't have to keep refreezing it.
Stretching:I have been doing stretches throughout the day and have been finding them most effective. Stretching all those tight areas is loosening them up and providing some relief. Do this several times a day for about 10 minutes to get relief from pain.
Lie down:I have been lying down often today and the last few days. This takes the weight off your bones and muscles which helps relieve the pain. While lying down, apply ice on those painful areas...this is doing double duty and is a most effective pain reliever.
Massage:My husband is now home all the time, so I have nominated him as my personal massage!...He gives a pretty good massage, if I can keep his mind out of the gutter! Recruit your significant other to give you a total body massage.
Have him pay particular attention to your neck, shoulders and lower back where most of the pain general is....Teach him how to kneed and rub out those trigger and tender points. You may feel some increased pain and tingling while he is doing this, but after he is done, you will get much relief.
If you don't have a significant other or your significant other "sucks" at giving massages, as I know some people do....Try a professional...If you have never received a professional massage, this is something you should try at least once. Professionals seem to know just how much pressure to use, and which areas will benefit the most from massage.
Rolfing:
You may also want to see a professional that specialized in "rolfing". Rolfing, although is very painful during this kind of massage, can actually decrease the "tension" in your trigger and tender points, which can give you great relief from pain.
My son is the only person in my family that will "rolf me".
I have a severe spot in my lower back, on the right side right on my buttocks where my sciatic nerve runs through. This causes me terrible pain that travels down my right leg. Kneading that "lump" usually "breaks up" the knot in it and provides such great pain relief it is unbelievable.
If after you have tried all of the above pain relief measures, your pain hasn't decreased at all, I would suggest having someone knock you out...no..just kidding...Although if you have a prescription for xanax and a prn (as needed) pain medication, this would be the time to take them. Then lie down, read a book or watch a movie and try to take your mind off of the pain.
Sometimes, when nothing else works, I grab a really good book and read. I can get my mind into the story and not think about the pain, even if it's only for a little while. Try this, it really is effective pain relief. Meditation works really good and this is a form of meditation.
I hope this helps at least some of you. I would like to hear from you about how you relieve your pain when your at home and you just can't stand it anymore. Leave me a comment in my comment box. You may have some great ideas that could help me and others!!
The Caring Place is a place for you to learn about fibromyalgia, the many treatments available, research and the many disorders that are associated with fibromyalgia and chronic pain. I also will post what I am going through with my own Fibromyalgia symptoms.
I use ice packs a lot. Meditation also works wonders for me.
ReplyDeleteYes F&F, I also use icepacks regularly. I think if those of us with fibromyalgia, take treatment into our own hands, we will have better results than our doctors have.
