How to find a doctor who is not afraid to prescibe narcotic pain medication

Finding a doctor who will treat your pain properly

Trying to find a doctor is no easy feat, especially when you suffer from an invisible pain disease that requires narcotics like fibromyalgia. There are a lot of doctors who don't believe that narcotics should be used for any
kind of pain. And so they do not prescribe them to anybody for anything. There are also doctors who fear the State and Government Agencies who monitor narcotic prescriptions use and look for narcotic
prescription abuse.

The doctors who don't believe in prescribing narcotics for fibromyalgia generally prescribe physical therapy, massage therapy, chiropractic and over the counter medications such as Tylenol, ibuprofen or Bengay. Although these are all helpful for some people with either mild pain or those who have been recently diagnosed and haven't exhausted other treatments and medications.

But, if your a long-time sufferer of the pain of Fibromyalgia and have tried everything else, you may want to try out a more potent pain medication, such as a narcotic pain medication, to see if it will help decrease or even get rid of your pain.

There are (on the other side) those doctors who are OK prescribing narcotics for pain. These are the doctors who know that there are people in pain where as the narcotics do work to decrease their pain. They have seen their patients benefit from narcotic pain medications and do not have an issue with prescribing them for pain. How do you find one of those doctors?:

Yellow Pages:

Doctor shopping” can make you feel like a drug seeker, but you need not feel this way. If narcotic pain medications really help decrease your fibromyalgia pain, then there is no reason not to doctor shop to find a doctor in your area who will prescribe narcotic pain medications.

Grab a Phone Book and turn to the Yellow Pages. Find "Pain Specialist" and also "General Practitioners. You can also look under "Rheumatologists" to find a doctor who prescribes narcotic pain medication.

Go down the lists, calling each doctors office and ask to talk to a nurse. The nurse can tell you whether the doctor uses narcotic medications for the treatment of pain. Don't stop once you find one doctor, keep going, finding several, in case you either can't understand the doctor or you just don't "click". You will be seeing this doctor alot for treatment, so you want to be able to discuss your symptoms and any other problems you may have, comfortably.

Friends, Family and Acquaintances:

Do you know anyone who has a pain disease? If you do, ask them what doctor they use. Ask if he/she gets along with their doctor, how his mannerisms are, how he acts towards narcotic pain medications and if he is in a hurry all the time or does he make time to answer all his/her questions. Then ask for their doctors' phone number.

Hospital Hotline:

Call your local Hospitals' "doctors hotline" and ask them if they know any doctors in town who will prescribe narcotic pain medications for fibromyalgia. Most Hospitals have this service for people who need a doctor for whatever reason. They know the doctors in town fairly well and can help you not only with finding a doctor who will treat your pain with narcotics, but they will also know if the doctor has good "bedside" manners, makes time for his/her patients and is taking patients at that time. Quite a nice service.

Make sure that whatever doctor you end up with, that they  either specialize in the treatment of fibromyalgia or at least believes in fibromyalgia. Some doctors don't believe fibromyalgia is a disease, they think it's just a "dump all" diagnoses.

Are you having trouble finding a doctor who will prescribe you narcotic pain medication for your pain? What have you tried to find a doctor who will prescribe narcotic medications?
